The renewable heat incentive (R.H.I) has been given the go ahead and we should expect to see it go live from April 2011.

It guarantees a cash payment for those that generate their own renewable heat.

No details have been confirmed as of yet post budget 2010, but we do now know that the treasury has set aside some £800m for its implementation.

If you have a South facing roof and want to cash in, you will get paid 41.3p for every KW of electricity you generate regardless of whether you use it or not and to top it off, anything you don't use, you will earn an extra 3p per kWh.

It's best to act quick though, the current rate of 41.3p is only here until April 2012 then it reduces to 37.8p or may disappear completely for new installations if the scheme has proved too popular.

Also known as 'rent a roof', there are some companies offering to put solar panels on your roof for free. They can do this because they take all the income they generate over the 25 year term.

We're talking around £25,000 total income. If the initial financial investment is something out of your reach, fine, but what we would recommend is, if you have the money and are looking for a sound place to earn a nice income- Do it yourself!!
